“We are compelled to create, to invent, to innovate while addressing practical needs. This mix of art and science, craftwork and professional responsibility is intoxicating. Cognitively, we are required to balance big picture with technical detail; a team of professionals is bound through discipline. When done well, the results not only meet the needs of the client but they exceed any single participant’s vision. It doesn’t get better than that.”

What do you enjoy most about working in the architecture and design industry?

I am obsessed with making stuff that I can reach out and touch, smell, hear, and see. Architecture goes beyond mere making of stuff to focus on something more compelling and subtle: Place.

Creating places that frame and provide a stage for our unfolding lives is a great thing to be doing. But its is made all the more profound by the inherent uniqueness of every project. Unlike manufactured product, architecture is about its relationship to its individual site. This tailoring of the client's program to a unique place in the world is what I enjoy most.

What’s your favorite Place?

On top of a mountain.
